UFC 87 Georges St. Pierre vs Jon Fitch, Brock Lesnar vs Heath Herring quick picks

by mmaninja 8/9/2008 8:35:00 PM

I didn't get a chance to do quick picks for last few UFC events, but the picks are back. Here they are this UFC 87: Seek and Destroy. Obviously St. Pierre vs Fitch, Lesnar and Roger Huerta vs Kenny Florian are interesting fight, but the rest of the card on paper is so so for me.

Cheick Kongo Vs. Dan Evensen - Kongo was kinda ripped off in favor of no talent hack Heath Herring in his last fight but showed some improvement in his ground game and I think came away with a few lessons from the fight. That's all that matters in a close loss like that and Kongo will be better off. Evenson fought in Bodog several times but hasn't beaten anyone of note. UFC's heavyweight division is lacking right now so they're bringing him in to feed to Kongo. Picking Kongo by KO

Luke Cummo Vs. Tamdan McCrory - should be a fun fight as both of the guys have decent standup and like to push the action in their fights. Picking Tamdan McCrory based on his better record of winning against better fighters and his reach.

Jason MacDonald Vs. Demian Maia - another fight that has the potential to be pretty exciting from the ground game perspective. Both MacDonald and Maia's previous victories were exciting finishes. Picking Maia by submission.

Manny Gamburyan Vs. Rob Emerson - Rob Emerson has actually faced several good guys like Pulver, Vasquez, Mishima in his MMA career prior to his appearance on the Ultimate Fighter TV show. Gamburyan has gotten on a few win streak, both by submissions, since list injury loss to Nate Diaz. Seems like Emerson has had issues with good ground guys in the past, so I'm picking Manny Gamburyan by a few very hard rights, takedown, some pounding and submission.

Kenny Florian Vs. Roger Huerta - after watching UFC 87 Countdown and watching the Roger Huerta segment all I can say is wow. What a story! It's amazing what he has achieved coming off his childhood experiences. He was lucky to have had the people that helped him get on his feet, but his hard work and determination kept him on course. This completely throws out his image of happy go lucky mexican college kid who's fed easy fights. Come on, Clay Guida is an easy fight?

Onto Kenny Florian. He is very intelligent and established himself as a lifelong learner of MMA. His dedication and motivation to be the best has been showing in his recent fights. With that said, I think Huerta's has more power and faster pace, so I'm picking Roger Huera by an exciting decision.

Brock Lesnar Vs. Heath Herring - picking Brock Lesnar to give Heath Herring a retirement beating. Straight right, takedown, vicious ground and pount till TKO.  Herring still sucks on the ground after 11 years of being in MMA. This will be much like Jake O'Brian's domination of Herring, only Brock Lesnar will do killer damage.

Georges St-Pierre Vs. Jon Fitch - the event will start in a few minutes, so I'm out of time. Picking Georges St. Pierre by a clean win over the blood and guts of Jon Fitch in a long exciting and gruelling fight!

MMA Ninja's UFC 82 Anderson Silva vs Dan Henderson Quick Picks and thoughts

by mmaninja 3/1/2008 2:54:00 PM

Not going to get into why posting has been lacking lately, that's for a later post about life getting in the way.....

Anderson Silva Vs. Dan Henderson - it's one of those fights for me where it's just very difficult to pick. I really like both fighters. Anderson Silva is really well rounded and only lacks in takedown defense where Dan Henderson excels. Henderson also, in my opinion, has more power to his wild punching style but Silva is extremely accurate with his. That's the beauty of MMA, this fight can end in a number of way. I'm picking Anderson Silva by slow methodical pick apart.

Heath Herring Vs. Cheick Kongo - I really don't like Herring and how perpetually over hyped he is even though he's been show up numerous times for what he is - sloppy mediocre fighter unwilling to improve any aspect of his MMA game. Just look up a pinnacle of his MMA evolution - fight against Gan McGee.  Anyways,  Cheick Kongo looks to be always in shape and his imposing size and reach combined with his good striking should lead him to beating the always under performing sloppy Herring. Picking Kongo.

Alessio Sakara Vs. Chris Leben - Already addressed this one. WTF is Sakara doing in UFC? I'm glad Leben is thinking exact same thing. In his last knockout victory, Leben showed he can improve himself to be a better fighter with good composure and go crazy when appropriate.  Picking Leben to clean Sakara's clock and send him packing once and for all. Warm up the bus Sakara!

Chris Wilson Vs. Jon Fitch  It's no secret that Jon Fitch has been the top 170 "parallel" contender for while now. Remember Chuck Liddell when Tito Ortiz was terrified of fighting him? Well, it's kind of the same with Jon Fitch right now except it's not the current champion who's scared, it's the UFC and the fact that their promotion strategies and campaigns take forever to unravel.  In the mean time Jon Fitch has been winning. Picking Fitch to continue his "parallel" contender streak.

Yushin Okami Vs. Evan Tanner Evan Tanner? Really? How desperate does an organization have to be to dig up a serious alcoholic homeless former fighter after years of drinking away his life??  Yushin Okami could have been fighting Anderson Silva tonight had he not picked a wrong "coast till 3rd round and try a submission them" strategy in his fight with Rich Franklin, which he could have won with more effort early on. He's not the most exciting fighter, but he's cleaned the 185 division's middle tier and is due for a desperate shot at Anderson Silva/Henderson winner. Picking Okami by mouthwashing with vodka before the fight and making sure Tanner gets a whiff and the ground and pounding for the win.

Jake O'Brien Vs. Andrei Arlovski It's garbage what UFC is doing to Arlovski after a boring loss on one knee to The Lame-iac Sylvia and a boring win over coma inducing Werdum. I hope the show the fight tonight because I think Arlovski is due for dealing out a vicious beating with a KO or at least a submission. Picking Arlovski to come back with a bang.

Luigi Fioravanti Vs. Luke Cummo Cummo looked pretty good in his last two fights and Fioravanti lost his last two, but I'm picking Fioravanti because he's faced much better competition than Luke did.

Dustin Hazelett Vs. Josh Koscheck  Koscheck should be ready to rip his opponent up after his loss to Georges St. Pierre, it just happens to be a less experienced Hazelett. Picking Koscheck

David Bielkheden Vs. Diego Sanchez Sanchez just dropped two close fights to Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck and should be getting back on track in this one. Picking Sanchez to win in an exciting fashion for which he's been known for in the past.

John Halverson Vs. Jorge Gurgel  not really sure about this one, but leaning toward Gurgel by decision after taking a good beating as usual.

UFC 79 unaired preliminary fight Roan Carneiro beat Tony DeSouza

by mmaninja 12/31/2007 5:53:00 PM

In my UFC 79 quick picks post I picked Tony DeSouza over Roan Carneiro because of his training with BJ Penn camp and him having more (longer even) experience than Carneiro.  It was a good technical mostly ground fight.  Carneiro took the fight to the ground quickly after clinching and ended up on top in DeSouza's guard. DeSouza played good rubber guard (best defensive guard game there is) right into a deep armbar, which Carneiro got out of with some work. DeSouza scrambled into Carneiro's half-guard where Carneiro applied a pretty good kimura. Desouza straightened/twisted out his arm out of the kimura and in the process got into a loose mount and landed a few punches while Carneiro threw him off. DeSouza scrambled back into Carneiro's guard where Carneiro landed a few downward elbows from the bottom to finish off the round. After that round I felt good about my picking him to win.

Round two with started off with DeSouza pushing the action in stand up until Carneiro clinched him on the fence where the action stalled for a bit. The ref restarted them, DeSouza again pushed the stand up until Carneiro took him down when DeSouza over commited with a straight right.  Desouza tried a few things from the guard and then tried to scramble up near the fence. That's where Carneiro worked his way onto DeSouza's back and straightened him out with tight hook and rained down punches. DeSouza couldn't get out of the hooks and the ref had to stop the fight for a TKO from punches. DeSouza complained a bit to the ref but he couldn't improve his condition and Carneiro's punches weren't slowing down.

Dammit, I just looked at Sherdog.com, and guess I forgot that Carneiro is the same guy that gave Jon Fitch, the next best top contender at 170, real hard time and fits during the first round of their fight. I mean he really threatened Jon Fitch with a loss, I was worried till Fitch showed why he's the top contender. Carneiro also beat Rich Clementi.

I can't believe I picked DeSouza for the win. Carneiro is a top notch fighter. But I made the "quick picks" in a hurry. With that said DeSouza did good for a while againts a very tough Carneiro.

Watch out for Roan "Jucao" Carneiro at 170, he's going to make some waves very soon.
